‘Break of Day’ Now Playing at Malthouse Theatre
Steve Rodgers’ play Break of Day premiered at Malthouse Theatre after winning the Rodney Seaborn Playwrights Award and The Australian Writers Guild Prize for Playwriting. Directed by Sarah Goodes and starring Kat Stewart.
Break of Day transports audiences to the rural town of Burra Creek, home to the world’s largest online retail warehouse. Pam (Kat Stewart) works the nightshift, catching three buses while the rest of the world sleeps. Meanwhile, her daughter Rae (Sherry-Lee Watson) is also pulling an all-nighter, but for very different reasons. Rae is at the top of her class, but it’s hard to climb the rungs of opportunity in a town the NBN forgot.
“Sarah Goodes’ sensitive direction – and the layered ironies and intimacies of Rodgers’ brilliantly overheard script – underpin some wonderful performances.”- ★★★★ Cameron Woodhead, The Age
“Kat Stewart is superb in this deeply moving portrait of Australia’s working class” - ★★★★ Tim Byrne, The Guardian
“Goodes has a sure handle on Rodgers’ tightly drawn story, with Stewart’s performance soaring high above that fabulous revolve.” - ★★★★ Time Out
