Neil Amrfield opens “La Cenerentola (Cinderella)” celebrating State Opera South Australia’s 50th Anniversary
Rossini’s La Cenerentola (Cinderella) opened last week at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Adelaide celebrating State Opera South Australia’s 50th anniversary (Golden Jubilee). Directed by Neil Amrfield, the limited season of 4 performances runs until 16 May 2026.
Rossini’s La Cenerentola offers an exhilarating retelling of the timeless Cinderella story, replacing fairy-tale magic with dazzling vocal performances, spirited comedy and musical brilliance through his exquisite score. Angelina (Cinderella), played by Anna Dowsley, a gentle and gracious young woman, is abused and mistrusted by her vain stepsisters and pompous father, Don Magnifico. Yet her quiet strength and compassion shine through, capturing the heart of the Prince – not through enchantment, but through strength of character. Neil and Designer Stephen Curtis bring a 70’s twist to the production.
“Neil Armfield, probably Australia’s most experienced opera director has taken the helm of this production, and delivered fun, frivolity, and fine music, in equal serves.” ★★★★1/2 Glam Adelaide
