Lucy Coleman

Writer / Director

Most recently Lucy wrapped production on her half-hour psychological thriller Exposure for Stan. The series was produced by production company Thirdborn -  Nicole Donahue (Love Me, Frayed), Shaun Grant (Snowtown, Mindhunters) and Justin Kurzel (Nitram, True History of the Kelly Gang) and is now in post-production. Lucy wrote every episode of the series and was an Associate Producer on the program, it is set to air in June.

She also wrote, directed and co-produced the short film Lean In which recently won Best Comedy at Flickerfest.

In 2022 Lucy also received a prestigious director’s attachment on the smash hit Network 10 and Hoodlum series Five Bedrooms working with director Peter Templeman.

Lucy’s first feature film Hot Mess (nominated for an AACTA for Best Indie Feature Film and an ADG AWARD for Best Direction) became an Aussie festival hit and made its International Debut at Seattle International Film Festival. It was selected by SIFF Artistic Director Beth Barrett as one of the festivals must see films alongside Bo Burnham’s Eight Grade and Desiree Akhavan’s The Miseducation of Cameron Post. Hot Mess was named “one of the best films of 2019” and placed in the Top 30 Australian films of the decade by The Curb - with Lucy being named “one of the most exciting new voices in Australian cinema”. Hot Mess is available now on Netflix and Binge in Australia & NZ and Amazon Prime in the USA.

While Lucy was waiting for Hot Mess to be released she was working on her follow up project the web series On The Fringe, which made its online debut in 2018. It premiered internationally at UK's Pilot Light TV Festival in Manchester and had its North American Premiere at LA Comedy Festival - 365. It was also selected for Wendie Webfest Hamburg, Sicily Webfest and won Best International Screenplay at Copenhagen Webfest. On The Fringe was picked up for global distribution by GoBuzz and has received over 6 million views on DailyMotion.

She was nominated for two Australian Directors Guild Awards in 2020. Best Director for a Feature Film under $1mil for Hot Mess and Best Director for Commercial Content for her work on the Koala Mattress Campaign: The Ex-(orcism).

Lucy was selected for the prestigious Talent USA in 2019 run by Screen Australia, that sent 10 Aussie filmmakers to LA for a week of intensive workshops and networking. She also did a director’s attachment on Nitram written by Shaun Grant and directed by Justin Kurzel.

With a drive to write stories that dig deep into the guttural truths of the female experience, Lucy's projects rip into a raw and irreverent take on some of those places that are a little touchier (and humiliating...) to explore.  Adamant to share those more shameful experiences, makes others feel less alone and have a good bloody laugh along the way.

Lucy graduated with a Masters of Creative Writing from Sydney University in 2013 and a Graduate Certificate in Screenwriting from AFTRS in 2014. In her early late teens/early twenties Lucy was an active member of the Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP) as an actor and writer, taking out their New Voices Competition in 2014 with her short film Hot Kebab Guy.
