Ariel Dorfman is a Chilean-American author of plays, screenplays, essays, fiction and poems in both English and Spanish and he holds the Walter Hayes Research Professor of Literature and Latin American Studies at Duke University. Ariel is a regular contributor to The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Nation, The Village Voice, and many other papers world-wide.  He is a member of the Academie Universelle des Cultures in Paris and has received numerous honorary degrees.  He has been a human rights activist for many years.  His books have been translated into over forty  languages and his plays have been performed in over 90 countries.

Ariel’s plays include Widows (New American Plays Award of the Kennedy Centre, Winner 1988; opened at the Mark Taper Forum 1991); Reader (winner of the Roger L. Stevens Award of the Kennedy Center, 1991; opened at the Edinburgh Festival, 1995); Death and the Maiden (Time Out Award/Best London Play, 1991; Olivier Award Winner, Best New Play 1992; opened in London 1991, and produced in over 90 countries); Mascara (with Rodrigo Dorfman, based on the author’s novel; World Premiere, Germany 1998); Oscar Nacht (World Premiere, Germany 1998); Speak Truth to Power: Voices from Beyond the Dark (based on a book by Kerry Kennedy-Cuomo of the same name; Kennedy Center); Purgatorio (Seattle Rep, Arcola, London, Madrid); The Other Side (New National Theatre, Tokyo, Manhattan Theater Club); Picasso’s Closet (Theater J, Washington DC). His new plays include Allegro! and Adios, Cervantes, written in 2016 to commemorate the 400th year of Cervantes death.  

Ariel’s films include: Balmaceda (co-screenwriter, Winner of First Prize, Chile Films 1973); Death and the Maiden (dir Roman Polanski, co-written and co-produced by Ariel Dorfman); Prisoners in the Time (BBC teleplay written with Rodrigo Dorfman, starring John Hurt, aired August 1995; winner of Best Feature Film, WGGB Awards, 1995); My House is On Fire (short film based on Dorfman’s short story; co-directed with Rodrigo Dorfman); and Dead Line (Channel Four Films). Ariel’s radio work includes Konfidenz (Radio 4/World Service, 2000); and Widows (Radio 4/World Service, 2001). Ariel has written eight novel and had many collections of short stories and poetry published.
