Stephen McCallum
Director
Stephen McCallum is a talent in the Australian film and television landscape. His most recent project, documentary series The Postcard Bandit for Binge and Warner Brothers, received strong reviews and stayed in the top ten programs viewed on the streamer long after its release. He both directed and produced the series. Stephen's other documentary work Never Get Busted! had its World Premiere at Sundance 2025 and was showcased at MIFF.
Stephen’s debut feature 1% (2018), which was produced by See Pictures and stars Ryan Corr in the lead, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival where it earned stirring reviews and was picked up for US distribution by A24. The film went on to earn five AACTA nominations in all acting categories and for Best Original Screenplay.
Stephen McCallum graduated from AFTRS in 2011 and was awarded both the Foxtel Exceptional Talent and AFTRS EU Scholarships. During his time there he directed the short films Girl Next Door and Inferno as well as the short documentaries Help (2010), Witness (2011) and The Mirror (2011). Prior to that Stephen wrote and directed the FTI funded Link short Ambulance and the award-winning Revel 8 short [+ -] (2009). His documentary works include the ABC funded street art doco ReFace (2009) and the making of featurette for Ben C. Lucas' acclaimed film Wasted on the Young (2009). As a music video director, Stephen has a portfolio of over 20 clips including artists such as Snowman, End of Fashion and Sugar Army. He was awarded the WAMI and WA Screen Award twice for Best Music Video.
After graduation Stephen worked consistently across commercials. He directed GetUp! Australia's It's Time viral spot, as part of their campaign for marriage equality. The clip was an online sensation with over 6,000,000 hits, winning Best Viral Advert from AdNews.
In 2014 Stephen was named as the recipient of the Director’s Attachment Scheme, funded by Screen Australia and managed by the ADG. He was attached to the feature film Cut Snake (dir. Tony Ayres, 2014). In 2015 he was the Second Unit Director on Endemol and the Nine Network’s Gallipoli. Stephen was also the 2nd Unit Director on sci-fi thriller I am Mother (dir. Grant Sputore/ The Penguin Empire, 2019) starring Hillary Swank and Rose Byrne.
