Nick Waterman

Nick Waterman is an award-winning writer and director.

In 2012, he made his screenwriting and directorial debut with the short film From Here, which held its world premiere at the Palm Springs Film Festival. In 2014, he wrote and directed Vote Yes starring Miranda Tapsell and Mirrah Foulkes. The film follows a family on the day of the 1967 referendum as they head to the polls to vote on Indigenous rights. Vote Yes continues to play every year at special presentations during NAIDOC and Reconciliation Week.

In 2017 Nick’s third film After the Smoke held its world premiere at the 67th Berlinale and was nominated for a Crystal Bear Award at the festival. The film also screened at Aspen Shortsfest and the Melbourne International Film Festival. 

In 2020 Nick’s most recent film The Flame premiered at the 70th Berlinale as part of the Generation 14Plus section. The film was a highly collaborative community-led project made in Moree. It has since screened at Hot Docs and Aspen Shortsfest. The Flame won ‘Best Australian Short Film’ (Academy® Qualifying) at Flickerfest International Film Festival in February 2021.  

Nick has also achieved recognition and awards for his music videos and commercial work, including ‘Best Direction for a Music Video’ by the Australian Directors’ Guild in 2018. 

Under their production company Speech&Drama Pictures, Nick and artistic partner Meg Washington are currently writing a feature film adaptation of the famous Paul Kelly song, How to Make Gravy, with funding from Screen QueenslandNick will also direct and produce the feature. They are also developing a limited series based on the novel Madness: a memoir by Kate Richards, in league with two Australian production companies.
