With a strong sense of genre and a natural ability for storytelling, James has been writing elevated-genre scripts which have attracted local and international attention for the past several years. His conceptual sci-fi script Solitary progressed to the Quarterfinals Round of the 2011 Nicholl Fellowship in Screenwriting, the Fellowship run by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. It has been optioned by Porchlight Films. James had another script selected for the Nicholl Fellowship, sci-fi/action feature Harvester, which went through to the Semifinals in 2012.

James’ short film, Shift (2014), which he wrote, directed and produced was screened at over twenty film festivals worldwide, including Palm Springs, Cinequest and Raindance. Shift won Best Film at Sandfly Film Festival, two ACS awards and the Australian Production Design Guild award for design on a short film. A feature version of the film is currently in development.
