Michael Rymer's Premiere Episode of 'Fires' Garners Strong Reviews

Cameron’s wishes to congratulate Michael Rymer, whose premiere episode of Fires has garnered strong reviews.

Heartbreak, loss, heroism, humanity and community. Inspired by true events, Fires tells the story of everyday Australians at the front line of the devastating fires of the 2019-2020 Australian summer.

Luke Buckmaster for The Guardian hails the debut episode as ‘a showstopper...the series makes a compelling argument that the entire emphasis of disaster movies was wrong to begin with: that the potential for truly great drama lies less in the immediate impact of catastrophic events than in the aftermath.’

Karl Quinn for the Sydney Morning Herald gave the series a 4.5 star review, stating it’s ‘powerful, convincing, and deeply moving.’

The series stars Richard Roxburgh, Noni Hazlehurst, Anna Torv, Eliza Scanlan, Hunter Page-Lochard and Sam Worthington. FIRES was co-created by Tony Ayres and Belinda Chayko, and Michael shares directing duties with Ana Kokkinos and Kim Mordaunt.

The first episode of Fires aired Sunday, September 26. Episodes will air weekly on Sunday at 8:40pm on the ABC.
