'Playing Beatie Bow' Adapted by Kate Mulvany opens at STC’s new Wharf Theatre

Congratulations to adapter Kate Mulvany on the opening of Playing Beatie Bow at STCs new Wharf Theatre.

Based on Ruth Park’s novel, Abigail, a teenager dealing with her parents’ messy separation, follows mysterious young girl Beatie Bow back through time from Sydney’s The Rocks in the present day to the year 1873, when the suburb was full of struggling immigrant families, gangsters and a whole host of larger-than-life characters. With the help of Beatie, her wise grandmother, and the whole Bow family, Abigail goes on a wild adventure through twisting alleyways of history in a race to find her way home.

"More than the lovable characters, gripping story-telling and the sense of place so profound that you can smell it, Ruth Park’s 1980 novel for mature teens, Playing Beatie Bow, enchants us with magical time displacements, deep mysteries and Orkney folklore. Making that magic shine on the stage as it does on the page is the rabbit that playwright Kate Mulvany and director Kip Williams have pulled out of the hat, the pair reviving a collaboration that previously gave us Park’s The Harp in the South.." ★★★★ - Sydney Morning Herald

“Mulvany opens up the work and allows it to breathe, carefully taking her time to grow the story.” ★★★★ - The Guardian

“Playing Beatie Bow, from Kate Mulvany, is sure to have a life well beyond the four walls of Sydney Theatre Company’s Wharf Theatre.” ★★★★ - ArtsHub

The season is almost sold out but there are a few tickets remaining. You can purchase them here.
