Helmut Bakaitis


Helmut graduated from NIDA in 1965 and for more than 50 years has had a varied career as an actor, teacher, writer and director.

He was a director of the South Australian Theatre Company and in charge of their youth activities which began his long involvement in Youth Theatre, taking him to Britain to engage in youth work at the Round House and Jackson’s Lane Centre in Central London.   On his return to Australia, he was the founding Artistic Director of St Martin’s Youth Arts Centre in Melbourne, a school that is still going strongly.

After several other Artistic Director posts, he spent 10 years as Head of Directing at NIDA.

Among many, some of his acting credits include the Architect in Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolutions, the Academy Award nominated The Mysterious Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello, Happy Feet, Truth, Rake, and Hacksaw Ridge.
