Alex Wu is an Australian director and screenwriter, based in Sydney, Australia.
An honours graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts School of Film & Television, his short film IDOL was awarded the prestigious Dendy Award for Best Australian Live-Action Short Film at the 2020 Sydney Film Festival, two awards at the 2020 Brooklyn Film Festival for Best Male Actor and the Spirit Award in Short Narrative, and nominations at the 2020 Australian Directors’ Guild Awards and the AACTA Awards. Other festival selections for his work include BFI London Film Festival, Flickerfest, Adelaide Film Festival, Edmonton International Film Festival and Revelation Perth International Film Festival.
Following the success of IDOL, Alex was a recipient of the 2021 Closer Productions and Adelaide Film Festival Micro-Grant for Diverse Voices, participated in the 2021 Australians in Film (AiF) UNTAPPED development program and 2022 Netflix ANZ Writer’s Journey Lab, and was elected to serve as a jury member for the 68th Sydney Film Festival’s Dendy Awards, alongside Emile Sherman and Sheila Jayadev. In 2023, he was the recipient of the Next-Gen Australian-Chinese Filmmaker Award at the Chinese New Year Film Festival in Melbourne.
Alongside teaching in a seasonal capacity at the VCA School of Film & Television, Alex has since been involved in writer’s rooms with Easy Tiger and See-Saw Films, and is currently in development of a television series with Princess Pictures, as well as a number of narrative projects including a feature film, a half-hour family comedy, and a contemporary science-fiction drama.
