Production Designer

Alex has built an extensive list of credits as a production designer for feature films. His most recent project is Lucy McKendrick’s Fangs (Truant Pictures / Aggregate Films). Currently in post-production, the film stars Joel Edgerton and Toni Collette and follows the daughter of a private prison mogul who becomes obsessed with a charismatic inmate.

In 2024, Alex designed Eric (dir. Lucy Forbes), a television series for Netflix starring Benedict Cumberbatch. His skillful design was instrumental in creating the 1980s New York City setting and won him the 2025 APDG Award for Design for a Television Production. Prior to this, Alex designed Del Kathryn Barton’s debut feature, Blaze (Causeway Films), which had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival. In 2020, he designed Leigh Whannell’s critically acclaimed remake of The Invisible Man for Universal Pictures, Blumhouse Productions and Goalpost Pictures. His work on the film earned unanimous acclaim, an AACTA Award nomination for Best Production Design in a Feature Film and an APDG Award nomination in the same category.

In 2019, Alex designed Jennifer Kent’s The Nightingale (prod. Kirstina Ceyton/ Causeway Films). An epic period piece set in 1820s Tasmania, the film was an official selection of the 75th Venice Film Festival, where it won the Special Jury Prize. It was also awarded Best Feature Film at the 2019 AACTA Awards, earning Alex another AACTA nomination for Best Production Design. His other credits include the critically acclaimed psychological horror The Babadook (2014), which earned him an AACTA Award nomination for Best Production Design in 2015 and a Critics Circle Award nomination in the same category, as well as Being Venice (2011) and Wish You Were Here (2011).

Alex originally studied Fine Art at the UNSW College of Fine Arts and was accepted into an exchange program at the world-renowned Glasgow School of Art in the UK, where he completed the second year of his Bachelor of Fine Art. He was one of four students accepted into the Production Design Masters course at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS) in 2003 and was the recipient of the Fox Award for best production design in his graduating year.
